Sumedang, Zona Musik - The rejection of the Geothermal Working Area plan on Mount Tampomas comes from the guardians of the mountain itself.
The Association of Custodians (Paguyuban Kuncen) of Sumedang Regency declared its rejection of the 22,514-hectare geothermal area plan that includes Mount Tampomas, as stipulated in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Decree No. 309/2025 based on letters of proposal from the Regent of Sumedang in 2023 and 2024.
The statement was conveyed by Uyut Anom and Itang Rohaendi as the Tampomas Custodians (Kuncen). They emphasized that the hereditary duty of the kuncen is only one: _ngajaga gunung supaya gunung ngajaga manusa_ (guarding the mountain so that the mountain guards humanity).
The custodians said they were never involved in the proposal process, even though the mountain is a living space they have guarded for hundreds of years as guardians of tombs, sites, sacred trails (petilasan), and _cai kahuripan_ (the water of life).
Their disappointment peaked at a hearing at the Sumedang DPRD on October 21, 2026. At that time, the custodians came together with the Majelis Adat Sumedanglarang and other coalitions to fulfill the council's invitation. However, the proposing party itself did not attend.
"We saw for ourselves that those who proposed did not come. The Regent was not present, the Regional Secretary was not present, even though they were the ones who proposed our mountain. Those who propose did not come, those who guard the mountain came. Punten, ieu kumaha logikana? (Excuse me, what kind of logic is this?)" the custodians wrote in their release, Thursday (10/29/2026).
For the custodians, Tampomas is not just a mountain.
First, Tampomas is an ancestor. There are ancestral tombs (makam karuhun), sacred sites, places for meditation, and springs that have historical value. Second, Tampomas is the Mother of Water (Ibu Cai), the source of water that sustains Sumedang. Third, Tampomas is the Tumpeng of the Earth (Tumpeng Bumi) whose belly must not be wounded.
They reminded that if the belly of the mountain is drilled 2-3 kilometers to extract hot steam, what comes out is not just steam but the wrath of nature. Moreover, beneath the foot of the mountain lies the Baribis Tampomas Fault, whose impact has never been studied.
"We are not anti-development. But development without permission from the ancestors is called destruction (ngaruksak)," they stressed.
On the momentum of Youth Pledge Day, the custodians declared three stances. First, to reject the 22,514-hectare Geothermal WPSPE including Mount Tampomas in any form because there is no blessing from the ancestors.
Second, to ask the Regent of Sumedang to climb Tampomas and explain in front of the ancestral tombs the reason why the mountain was proposed. The custodians quoted the ancestral message: _pamali ngaruksak Tampomas, lamun Tampomas diganggu, cai bakal beak, taneuh bakal gerak, lembur bakal sangsara, karuhun moal ngijinan_ (it is taboo to destroy Tampomas, if Tampomas is disturbed, the water will run out, the earth will move, the village will suffer, the ancestors will not allow it).
Third, to fully support the Tampomas Guard Oath by the Tampomas Guardian Youth with the motto _Insun Medal, Insun Madangan_ (I appear, I illuminate).
"We are old. We have no power. All we have is prayer. But remember, when the mountain cries, the first tears that fall are floods and earthquakes. Don't sell Tampomas, we do not give our blessing," they concluded.
